Celebrating 70 Years of Culture and Community at Seminaarinmäki Campus

In July, the Seminaarinmäki Campus celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Jyväskylän Kesä Festival with exhibitions, discussions, workshops, and garden events. As the historic heart of the festival since 1955, the EHL site welcomed thousands to reflect on culture, memory, and sustainability through open and inclusive programming.

In July 2025, the Seminaarinmäki Campus, a European Heritage Label Site, once again served as a vibrant cultural stage as it hosted the 70th anniversary of the Jyväskylän Kesä Festival — the oldest Nordic open-air culture festival, dating back to 1955. This year’s edition (2–8 July) featured a rich blend of music, art, roundtable discussions, workshops, exhibitions, and open-air events under the theme “Civilization.”

The University Science Museum and campus team collaborated on a special exhibition in the Lähde Library building tracing the festival’s history, from its greatest triumphs to its most curious scandals, through photographs, audio recordings, magazines, and posters. The exhibition opened on 1 July with a celebratory event and remains free and open to the public until 13 August.

Throughout the week, the campus offered five public roundtables, a philosophical walking tour, and an open garden day, all free of charge. Visitors could also plant wildflower meadows in the campus garden, take part in guided tours of the site and botanical garden, and contribute to a survey collecting personal memories of the campus, open until the end of 2025.

With over 50,000 people reached in 2024 (including online audiences), the Jyväskylän Kesä Festival continues to grow, and Seminaarinmäki Campus remains its beating heart, blending cultural heritage with dialogue, sustainability, and community life.
