Celebrating the Finale of the ‘Public Archaeology in Ostia Antica’ Project
On May 15th, the final event of the ‘Public Archaeology in Ostia Antica‘ project took place in the ancient theatre of Ostia Antica. This grand finale featured a vibrant theatrical performance by Italian students from ethnic-linguistic minority communities in the area, showcasing their talents and rich cultural heritage.
The ‘Public Archaeology in Ostia Antica’ project, which ran through the winter and spring of 2023-2024, brought together 90 enthusiastic students from diverse backgrounds.
These young participants started a journey to explore and celebrate the rich archaeological history of Ostia Antica, a place steeped in historical significance near Rome.
This wonderful initiative was made possible in collaboration with ScuoleMigranti, a dedicated volunteer network that teaches Italian to foreigners, migrants, and refugees. The project aimed to bridge cultural divides and build a sense of community through education and shared experiences. It was a perfect blend of archaeological discovery and artistic expression, making history come alive for everyone involved.
The overwhelming success and positive feedback from both participants and the community have inspired plans to replicate the ‘Public Archaeology in Ostia Antica’ project in the coming years. This ongoing effort seeks to provide more opportunities for educational and cultural enrichment for students from all walks of life.
The Archaeological Area of Ostia Antica was honored with the European Heritage Label (EHL) Award in 2019, recognizing its immense importance to the European project and its cultural and historical significance.
