The CISTERSCAPES network, which highlights the historical influence of Cistercian monastic landscapes across Europe, is actively participating in the European Heritage Days 2024. This year’s theme, “Routes, Networks, and Connections,” aligns perfectly with CISTERSCAPES’ mission to explore and promote the rich heritage of Cistercian landscapes that have shaped European culture for centuries.

Celebrating Cistercian Heritage Through Guided Tours and Events

Throughout September, a series of guided walks, bike tours, and cultural events will take place across various Cistercian sites in Europe, offering the public an opportunity to explore these unique landscapes.

  • September 7, 2024: In the Czech Republic, participants can join a guided walk through the monastic landscape below Zelená Hora in Žďár nad Sázavou, or enjoy a bike tour and cultural event in Vyšší Brod.

  • September 8, 2024: A bike tour in Germany will trace the footsteps of the Cistercians around the Tirschenreuth pond basin, starting at the Waldsassen basilica. Visitors can also explore the Langheim monastic landscape or hike the Helpers’ Trail across the Jura plateau.

  • September 22, 2024: Germany’s Maulbronn will host a walk through its monastic landscape, leading from the monastery mill through vineyards and historic sites. On the same day, the new CISTERSCAPES Information Centre will open in Ebrach, featuring guided tours, workshops, and medieval culinary experiences.

  • September 28, 2024: In Austria, the Rein Monastery will celebrate its 900th anniversary with the “Kultur & Kulinarik” festival. The event will offer Cistercian-inspired cuisine, monastery tours, and an introduction to the CISTERSCAPES network.

  • September 30 – October 5, 2024: Slovenia and Austria will see the opening of new local routes on the “Cistercian Way,” including a pilgrimage blessing at Zwettl Abbey.

In addition to these events, CISTERSCAPES encourages year-round exploration of Cistercian monastic landscapes. To enhance this experience, the network offers an interactive app, “CISTERSCAPES,” which can be downloaded for free. The app provides detailed information on various sites, guiding users through the history and cultural significance of these landscapes, making it easier to explore at any time.
