European Archaeology Days at Provadia-Solnitsata
From 12 to 14 June 2026, Provadia-Solnitsata took part in the European Archaeology Days for the second consecutive year with a special programme aimed at engaging both the local community and visitors to the site.
A highlight of the programme was the opening of the bilingual poster exhibition “Lords of the Salt” at the Municipal Art Gallery in Provadia. The exhibition was presented by Prof. Vassil Nikolov, Ph.D, Sc.D., Full member of BAS and Nikolay Hristov, Director of the Historical Museum of Provadia, who introduced visitors to the significance of Europe’s oldest prehistoric salt-production centre and its recent recognition with the European Heritage Label. As part of the exhibition, visitors could also explore 3D models of archaeological structures and salt-production facilities from Provadia-Solnitsata, created by students from Ivan Vazov Primary School in Provadia.
The event was complemented by an online Facebook challenge designed for children. Participants were invited to create their own interpretations of some of the most remarkable artefacts discovered at Provadia-Solnitsatain recent years. The initiative attracted numerous creative entries, while the works receiving the highest public appreciation were awarded certificates and prizes.
Throughout the three-day programme, Provadia-Solnitsata welcomed hundreds of visitors. Particular interest was generated by the archaeological game for young explorers, which attracted not only children but also many adults.
Through the wide range of activities organised by the site team, the European Archaeology Days once again provided an opportunity to promote archaeological heritage, strengthen public engagement, and encourage the active participation of the local community in presenting and preserving the past.
