What is a Learning Landscape?

At the European Heritage Label, we believe heritage has the power to inspire connection, care, and co-creation. That’s why we are proud to support the Learning Landscapes initiative, developed by Interpret Europe together with UNESCO.

This innovative approach helps transform regions into vibrant spaces where heritage connects people, strengthens communities, and sparks collective action for a sustainable future. At its core are local stakeholder networks that co-design meaningful heritage experiences, making heritage more relevant in people’s daily lives, while encouraging greater engagement in protecting our shared world.

Capacity building is central to this process: trained interpretive agents guide communities through co-creative workshops, while professionals expand their skills through courses designed to align heritage strategies with site planning and interpretive services.

Since its pilot phase in 2024, Learning Landscapes have shown great promise in regions across Europe. As the first phase concludes in 2026, six new Learning Landscapes will be launched, and we warmly invite regions to consider stepping into this movement.

What it takes to get involved:

  • A diverse set of heritage sites or properties
  • A steering group of around five committed organisations
  • A network of 30–50 stakeholders ready to co-create an interpretive strategy
  • 50–80 professionals willing to take part in training and capacity building

The programme aligns strongly with EU priorities on participation, inclusion, sustainable tourism, community empowerment, peace building, and sustainable development. Regions are encouraged to explore relevant funding opportunities to support their applications.
