European Music Trails: Uniting Music History Across Leipzig and Beyond

As part of the events connected to the EHL for authentic sites of music history in Leipzig, Notenspur Leipzig e.V. has created the European Music Trails, a co-operation project, that is continuously realised with changing European partner institutions and focuses on European composers and musicians who lived, studied or worked in Leipzig.

The European Music Trails initiative, a collaborative effort by Notenspur Leipzig e.V. as part of the European Heritage Label events in Leipzig, celebrates the city’s musical legacy. The initiative features a touring exhibition, “European Music Trails: The Art of Movement,” focusing on Johann Sebastian Bach and Baroque music and dance across Germany, Italy, and France. The celebration continues with the European Music Trails Festival 2023, honouring Baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann and his ties to France. The festival includes music series, the Telemann Soundwalk, and Franco-German choir exchanges, embodying the European ideal of unity through cultural diversity.

The European Music Trails Festival 2023 took centre stage from November 18 to 25, spotlighting the illustrious Baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann and his deep-rooted connections to France. The festival’s offerings included a music series as well as a sound and walking experience through the premiere of the Telemann Soundwalk on the Notenspuren app.

In the spirit of cultural exchange, the festival fostered connections between Franco-German choirs from Lyon and Leipzig, bridging linguistic and geographical divides through the universal language of music. With France as the festival’s partner country, a diverse program highlighting French musicians and dancers added an extra layer of richness to the festivities.

Ultimately, the European Music Trails Festival epitomized the European ideal of unity in diversity, bringing together artists and audiences from across the continent to celebrate a shared musical heritage.

Following the festival, the European Music Trails initiative continued with the grand opening of the touring exhibition, “European Music Trails: The Art of Movement.” The exhibition, focusing on Johann Sebastian Bach and Baroque music and dance in Germany, Italy, and France, is divided into three parts: the art of movement in music, the art of movement in dance, and the movement of ideas through Europe.
