Online Masterclass: Adapting Europe’s Cultural Heritage to a Rapidly Warming World

Europa Nostra will host an online masterclass on December 5, 2024, titled "Adapting Europe’s Cultural Heritage to a Rapidly Warming World: Climate Change Policy and Practice for Heritage Professionals."

Europa Nostra, supported by Creative Europe, will host an online masterclass on December 5, 2024, titled “Adapting Europe’s Cultural Heritage to a Rapidly Warming World: Climate Change Policy and Practice for Heritage Professionals.” This event is part of the European Cultural Heritage Agora project, which is focused on empowering Europe’s civil society for heritage protection, and is funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.

The masterclass is organized in cooperation with the Heritage Adapts to Climate Alliance (HACA), a joint initiative between Preserving Legacies and the Climate Heritage Network.

What to Expect

The session will focus on the emerging best practices in climate risk assessment and adaptation planning for heritage sites. Heritage professionals will learn from experts at Preserving Legacies about locally-led, science-based approaches to adapting heritage places to climate change.

A key component of the masterclass will be a case study from the Côteaux, Maisons et Caves de Champagne, a UNESCO World Heritage site in France, illustrating how these practices are being applied in the real world.

The masterclass will also cover climate adaptation policies at national, European, and international levels. An update will be provided by the European Heritage Hub team, who will have just returned from the 2024 UN Climate Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.
