Exploring the Cistercian Way: Slovenia launched Cisterscapes virtual routes

The Cisterscapes EHL Site has launched a fully virtualised version of the Slovenian section of the Cistercian Way. Using 360° imagery, visitors can explore Stična Abbey and Kostanjevica na Krki through three digital routes—offering an inspiring introduction to the wider pan-European Cistercian landscape.

This autumn, the Slovene Museum of Christianity—part of the Cisterscapes European Heritage Label Site—took an important step in making its cultural landscape more accessible. Building on the success of previous work with the European Heritage Volunteers, the museum collaborated with external partners to fully digitise the Slovenian section of the Cistercian Way, allowing visitors to explore two historic locations online: Stična Abbey and the former monastery at Kostanjevica na Krki.

The new virtual route is based on high-quality 360-degree imagery enriched with bilingual descriptions in Slovenian and English. It offers three different experiences tailored to visitors’ interests and time:

  • a half-day loop trail
  • a full-day loop trail, and
  • a multi-day journey from Stična to Kostanjevica.

These routes represent an essential element of European monastic heritage and form the Slovenian component of the wider pan-European Cistercian Way, developed through the Cisterscapes project.

The digital route is also available via the Outdooractive portal for on-site navigation. Meanwhile, the virtual version provides an engaging first encounter with the landscapes, architecture, and history of the Cistercian tradition—offering inspiration for visitors to take their first steps along the Way of the Cistercians.
