Hands-On History: Engaging Public Archaeology at Ostia Antica
The Parco Archeologico di Ostia Antica, known for its historical importance and well-preserved sites, has recently introduced a series of events designed to help the public connect more deeply with ancient history. The first event, called “Muri per tutti” (Walls for All), took place at Portus, the archaeological site of the Ports of Claudius and Trajan in Fiumicino.
Muri per Tutti: An Innovative Approach to Archaeological Engagement
The “Muri per Tutti” event represents a new approach to public archaeology at the Parco Archeologico di Ostia Antica. This initial event featured specialized guided tours and interactive workshops to engage participants in exploring the ancient port’s large wall structures. Attendees developed a greater appreciation for the historical and cultural significance of these structures after closely examining the details of Roman architecture.
The event was led by Valeria Di Cola, a well-respected archaeologist specializing in Roman architecture and public archaeology. Her knowledge and enthusiasm for Roman history helped participants uncover the stories behind the walls, bringing the ancient past to life.
The success of the first “Muri per Tutti” event paves the way for a series of similar initiatives scheduled for the autumn. These events aim to involve an increasing number of participants, providing them with the opportunity to engage with history in an immersive and hands-on manner. The Parco Archeologico di Ostia Antica reinforces its role as a leading site for public archaeology in Europe.
Promoting European Heritage Label (EHL) Initiatives
The Parco Archeologico di Ostia Antica’s dedication to public archaeology and education aligns perfectly with the goals of the European Heritage Label. The EHL recognizes sites that have played a significant role in European history and culture, promoting them as symbols of European values and ideals. By organizing events like “Muri per Tutti,” the park underscores its commitment to making history accessible and engaging for everyone.
The Parco Archeologico di Ostia Antica was granted the European Heritage Label in 2019.
