“Opheltis Untold Stories” Educational Initiative at the Archaeological Museum of Nemea
From February 19th to 23rd, 2024, the Archaeological Museum of Nemea, an EHL Site since 2021, hosted an educational event titled “Opheltis Untold Stories”, which drew the participation of 183 primary and secondary school students.
Guided by the mythical figure of Opheltis, the founder of the Nemean historical games, students ventured through the museum’s halls to learn more about the world of antiquity and athletics, and the ancient traditions of the Nemean Games. Activities included a treasure hunt, riddles, and practical tasks.
Furthermore, attendees took part in an educational session named “Unveiling the Secrets of Conservation”. Through this program, they were introduced to a variety of preservation techniques and had the chance to create their clay artifacts, deepening their understanding of heritage conservation.
What happens next?
The positive reception of the onsite programs has inspired organizers to extend their outreach efforts into the digital sphere. A game is currently in development to broaden the educational experience to a wider audience.
“Opheltis Untold Stories” is a project of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Corinthia in collaboration with Diadrasis NGO and is funded within the framework of the joint action of the European Heritage Days by the Council of Europe and the European Union.
