On 22 May 2026, Paderborn officially celebrated its designation as a European Heritage Label Site with a special reception held at the city’s historic Town Hall. Bringing together local leaders, European representatives, academics, and members of the public, the event marked an important milestone in recognising Paderborn’s contribution to Europe’s shared cultural heritage.

The reception opened with a welcoming address by Mayor Stefan-Oliver Strate, who highlighted the significance of receiving the European Heritage Label and the opportunities it creates for strengthening Paderborn’s European identity.

A panel discussion followed, exploring what the Label means for the city and its citizens. Speakers reflected on both the opportunities and the responsibilities that come with joining the European Heritage Label family, emphasising the importance of preserving cultural heritage while making it meaningful and accessible for future generations.

Around 150 registered guests attended the event, including several distinguished speakers and representatives from across Germany and Europe. Among them were Bernd Hüttemann, Secretary General of the European Movement Germany, Professor Dr Matthias Bauer, President of the University of Paderborn, and Rainer Steffens, Head of the North Rhine-Westphalia State Representation in Brussels.

The celebration highlighted that the European Heritage Label is not only a recognition of the past but also a commitment to the future. By encouraging dialogue, education, and European cooperation, Paderborn is embracing the responsibilities that accompany the Label while strengthening its role in promoting the values and stories that unite Europe.
