Restored “Monument to the Two Emperors” Unveiled at Kynžvart Castle

The historic Kynžvart Castle recently hosted a grand ceremony to unveil the restored “Monument to the Two Emperors,” a significant event marking the completion of a demanding restoration project within the castle park. The ceremony drew a crowd of approximately 250 attendees, who joined actors and members of the “historical sharpshooter association” in a procession toward the monument, located on a hill within the castle grounds.

The celebration was inspired by a notable historical event: the visit of Emperor Ferdinand I and his wife Maria Anna of Savoy to Chancellor Metternich on September 12, 1835. During this visit, the couple, along with their entourage, laid the cornerstone of what was initially known as the Francis I Monument. This act was intended to symbolize the strong mutual bond between the two emperors. Over time, the monument became known as the “Monument to the Two Emperors.” Uniquely, this monument, while situated on private property, was always intended for public appreciation, making it a rare artifact of its era.

Collaborative Efforts and Regional Support

The restoration of the monument was made possible through collaborations with various regional partners. The City of Lázně Kynžvart and Spa Lázně Kynžvart played significant roles in supporting the project. The coordination with the National Coordinator was also crucial, ensuring that the restoration met high standards of historical accuracy and preservation.

Kynžvart Castle’s European Heritage

Kynžvart Castle, recognized with the European Heritage Label in 2019, is renowned not only for its architectural beauty but also for its historical significance in European diplomacy. The castle is celebrated as a Site of memory for European diplomatic efforts, focusing on the quest for balance among Europe’s major states.
