University of Jyväskylä Hosts Children’s Science Camp on European Democracy and Civic Engagement

In October, the University of Jyväskylä’s Children’s University, JYUniorit, held a unique three-day science camp to introduce young learners to the foundations of European democracy, civic decision-making, and financial prioritization within a society. Children aged 7-12 participated in engaging, hands-on activities designed to nurture a love for learning and foster an early understanding of social sciences.
Throughout the camp, students explored the history of European democracy, practiced decision-making and argumentation skills, and worked together to decide on financial investment priorities for a modern society. The camp concluded with the young participants drafting a letter to city officials, presenting their thoughts and suggestions on ways to improve their community.
This initiative, organized in collaboration with Jyväskylä Summer University and the Jyväskylä University Museum, was guided by university students studying political science, philosophy, and history. The camp mentors created a welcoming environment for exploration, encouraging children to appreciate various fields of science without judgment and to understand the power of civic engagement from an early age.
Seminaarinmäki Campus was awarded the European Heritage Label in 2021.
