Renaissance sounds at Almadén and Yuste in EHL Call for Projects’24-Awarded Project
At the EHL Site Almadén Mining Park
On 6 September, the Patio of the Royal Miners’ Hospital of San Rafael at the Minas de Almadén–Parque Minerohosted a performance by the ensemble Camara Antiqva. Their programme, “Concierto de Extremadura al Nuevo Mundo”, recreated the imaginary journey of a couple leaving their homeland for the Americas.
The repertoire showcased Renaissance music by composers from Extremadura or connected to the region, including Juan Vásquez, Juan de Badajoz, Hernando Franco, Juan del Encina, Mateo Flecha and Gaspar Fernández. Performed in the historic setting of the Royal Miners’ Hospital the concert was a vivid reminder of how heritage and music intertwine to tell Europe’s shared stories.
The concert formed part of the EHL Call for Projects’24 – Awarded Project IVEPC (Integrating European Values into Cultural Heritage), co-financed by the European Union.
At the EHL Site Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste
Two weeks later, on 20 September, the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste welcomed the musical ensemble Carmina Terrarum as part of the Emperor’s Concert Series, organised by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation together with Patrimonio Nacional.
Entitled “El corazón del cancionero: cancioneros españoles y portugueses”, the programme guided audiences through some of the most representative Renaissance songbooks of the Iberian Peninsula. Works by Luis de Milán, pieces from the Cancionero de Elvas, the Cancionero de París, and the Cancionero de Palacio offered a musical journey reflecting the concerns, joys, and everyday life of Iberian societies during the Renaissance.
